There are other pockets where Soul music has been become synonymous...Philadelphia, Muscle Shoals (AL), Memphis, New Orleans and Chicago. Each is essential to the whole picture. But one must start with Detroit Soul and that means Berry Gordy and Motown. Soul music dominated the U.S. R&B chart in the 1960...and Motown was at the top. Mr. Gordy worked his label and artists and writers and producers and stylists and choreographers as an army of music. And it worked, beyond their expectations. One such Motown producer and artist is William Smokey Robinson. He helped bring so many folks to Berry Gordys label. He was the one who convinced Mr. Gordy to start his own label in the first place since he was feeling he couldnt get done what he (BG) wanted to do.
