DMPD BOXING CLUB AT RINGSIDE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS The DMPD Police Boxing club traveled to Independence, Missouri on July 28- August 2nd for the 14th Annual Ringside World Championships. This event is the largest amateur boxing tournament in the world. Countries from around the world come to participate in it every year. The event was held at the Independence Events Center. The Boxing Club took two fighters; 12 year old Hiatt Middle School student Carlos Jimenez and Lincoln High Senior Antonio Mireles. Carlos fought in the 80 pound division and made it to the semifinal bout where he lost. Antonio Mireles, this years Iowa Golden Gloves Novice Heavyweight champion competed in the 17-18 year old bracket and won the tournament in the heavyweight division. Antonio defeated Shaka Williams by unanimous decision in the championship bout to be crowned champion. Congratulations to the boys, Coaches John Saunders and Elly Nuñez. Coach Nuñez is a Juvenile Court Officer II for the Polk County Juvenile Court Services, Fifth Judicial District of Iowa and a fantastic role model and mentor for the kids.
