DO NOT STOP LEARNING ! ! ! It was a warm saturday morning in December...I reached my isolated exam centre which was completely otskirts and unreachable by public transport. Not very nervous about my correspondence BCA exam, i entered the examination hall with hall ticket and one raynolds ball point pen. I selected one corner seat in the third row of the classroom. On my front bench was an old man in his 70s sitting in a crisp formal shirt, arranging all his stationery with a rough sheet. Question papers were handed to us, i filled my answer sheet with few answers. I peeped to look at the old man. He had neatly drawn lines for each answer. I came out of the hall and waited for the old man. He came out after the last bell and i moved to him to tell a HI. I asked him about the exam, asked him what would he do with the degree at this age (out of curiosity). He jokingly replied, I thought i would find some good looking girls here..later he told how he was humiliated by his grand kids for not knowing how to use a computer and wanted to discover the box and things inside and be certified for it. My immediate question was Do you understand things written in the book at this age ( as i failed to understand many things in it). He cleared his throat and replied We do not stop learning because we are old; we grow old because we stagnate our learning. We elderly dont have regrets for what we have done, but rather for things we did not do and the only people who fear death are those with regrets. I saluted the man for his enthusiasm. I gave him a drop till his house and exchanged numbers. We got our results after two months and i cleared my exams. I called the old man on his land line number. His grand kid picked up the call and informed about his demise. I was shattered. I collected the young mans report from the university to discover that he had passed with a distinction. I handed over the report card to the young mans grand kid who held it proudly with tear filled eyes and a faint smile...... Moral : Growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional...
