DO THE RIGHT THING Spike Lee introduced his 1989 film, Do the Right Thing, and shared our enthusiasm in being able to watch it in its original clean film version. The screen at the Virginia is massive, set upon, what was originally a stage for vaudeville acts. I hadnt seen the movie in a really long time, and watching it took me back in time...the garb, the boom boxes! This movie began careers for many an actor, Rosie Perez comes to mind. I had forgotten quite a few details, including how white movie execs worried about race riots ensuing, especially if the movie was released in the hot summertime. Also, how Spike was dubbed a racist, when in reality, he allows the audience to sift through the personalities presented, and make up our own minds, as to what the right way to think and feel is. Spike was very generous with his time after the movie, ( letting us know that he gave up watching a game (lol) to be there) and I actually had him sign my Roger Ebert book. It was a full day of movies, Christmas in April:) Stay tuned!!!
