DO YOU KNOW? In a study of typically developing children, aged 1-6 years, researchers found that even after controlling for the age of the child, children’s capacity for symbolic play (for instance, pretending that a banana is a telephone) was strongly correlated with better language skills. Those who scored higher in their symbolic play also had better receptive language (what a child understands) and expressive language (speech). Source: Lewis, P., Boucher, J., Lupton, L., & Watson, S.
