DO YOU REMEMBER? I remember Ethel talking about learning to drive. You were expected to just get in the car and do it. She often laughed about driving to school, with no brakes, and as the car turned the corner and slowed down everyone would jump out. Then she would coast to a stop. Another note today - let us not forget that these girls were bi-lingual. They usually spoke Swiss at home. Ethel said they would have contests to see who could go the longest without speaking Swiss. Speaking of Kirchoffers grove and Devils Hollow - I remember - thats the first place I drove the car all by myself. I had several kids with me - I dont remember who - but I didnt really know how to drive - and I knocked over a fence in Kirchoffers yard. I had more nerve then than I do now! I remember driving Merls Ford into the peach orchard too - I couldnt stop. I had only 1 driving lesson - and that was from you Carrie. Remember - we drove south of Kidron to a lane, turned around and went home - and I was supposed to know how to drive! And I remember driving in to Dalton (like a school bus, really) in all kinds of weather in the Chevy with out brakes!! Horrors! -Ethel 5-15-60 While at Jeannies this time she gave me remembrances that she had written about out at Grandmas. They were so much fun to read. Dort read them out loud for Grandma, Lil, Ruthe, and the children. We got the biggest kick out of it all. Ill try to see that all of you will get to read them sometime too. It made me remember the time I sat on the cellar door lid and sang and ate a piece of pie. I can’t recall the Swiss song now but anyway Dad hadnt given thanks for the food at the end of the meal but I left the table anyways because it was so hot in the summer kitchen. Anyways, I fell off the lid and came up with a real pie face. Dad said if I had obeyed and stayed at the table it wouldn’t have happened. I think the song may have been Chwing, chwing, mach nit long! Alte buiba ish a shang! Remember it? -Carrie I read a story about a tree hut which reminded me of the house Carrie built up in the old cherry tree. I don’t remember of ever being up in it. I wasnt a very good climber. I remember picking cherries up on on a ladder on a windy day. I never liked to pick up potatoes the ground made my hands feel so dry and raspberries had too many thorns. -Lillian Do you remember Mothers old tack box? And the punch Dad used to have to fasten shoe buttons? My first pair of square dance shoes had straps to button. The cobbler didn’t even have buttons to replace the one I lost. I recall so well the button hooks we used. Are they a thing of the past? -Dort Do you remember the big elderberry bush Dad used to have over at the gate in the orchard. It was so big and nice. I remember a big wind storm passed the farm and blew it all down when it was blowing at its best and he felt so bad. How Dad loved nature. He would walk in the woods almost every Sunday. I sometimes would go with him and enjoy it so. I guess that is why I enjoy it so. -Ruthie
