DO YOU SMELL WHAT WE SMELL? Since were in the throes of winter right now, you probably know that winter has its own distinctive smell (and we dont mean the smell of hot cocoa, holiday wreaths, or chestnuts roasting on an open fire). But why does the cold of winter smell different from the heat of summer? One reason is that odor molecules move much more slowly as the air temperature drops, which means that there are simply fewer smells to smell on a cold, crisp day than there are on a hot and humid one. Whats more, our noses dont work quite as well when the ambient air is cold. (Our noses dont want to be outside in the elements either.)
