DO YOU SPEAK WHALE? NEW BEDFORD - Join two noted marine biologists as they present “Whale Science: A Local Acoustic Legacy,” the final program in the 2014 Old Dartmouth Lyceum fall lecture series, on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. ... Laela Sayigh, PhD, is a Research Specialist in Biology at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), and Michael Moore, PhD, is a Senior Research Specialist in Biology and Director of the Marine Mam­mal Center at WHOI. There will be a reception for Dr.. Sayigh and Dr. Moore in the Jacobs Family Gallery at 6 p.m. n the Cook Memorial Theater. Dr. Moore, recently featured in the Boston Globe for his work with the highly endangered North Atlantic right whale and is a former Whaling Museum Trustee,. Dr. Sayigh will describe the evolution of scientific interest in whales from natural history to conservation of the whaling industry including whale behavior, acoustics, neurobiology and conservation. Their presentation will highlight a recent acquisition by the Whaling Museum of a marine mammal acoustics archive collected by William Schevill and William Watkins of WHOI. This presentation is part of the Old Dartmouth Lyceum Fall Lecture Series. Established in 1828, the Lyceum is the region’s oldest public forum for “the advancement of popular education.” Admission: $15 for members, $20 for non-members. Light refreshments will be served. The New Bedford Whaling Museum is the worlds most comprehensive museum devoted to the global story of whales, whaling and the cultural history of the region. The cornerstone of New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park, the museum is located at 18 Johnny Cake Hill in the heart of the citys historic downtown. Museum hours are: April through December: Daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum hours January through March: Tuesday – Saturday from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Sunday 11 a.m. – 4 p.m., Open on Holiday Mondays.
