DO YOU WONDER HOW PRAYER WORKS? LISTEN TO THIS. One Sunday our preacher told of a project he’d been involved with called “prayer partners.” The idea was to pray for someone behind their back⎯someone who didn’t have the faintest idea you were praying for them. “What a great idea,” I thought, looking around the church. I spotted a wonderful couple sitting three pews ahead of me. BELLE and BRUCE Reynolds. They were a matched set; slightly above and slightly under five feet tall. And Bruce always wore a bow tie and twinkle in his eye. “I’ll PRAY FOR THEM, all week long, without their knowing about it,” I decided. And I did. The following Sunday morning I arrived at church late. Slipping into the pew, I noted that the ushers were completing a passing-of-the-baskets which struck me as odd. It was the custom of my church, to take no offering; but, instead, offertory boxes were at the rear. Later, at coffee hour, one of the ushers came up to me carrying a basket. Inside were THREE LITTLE SCRAPES of folded paper. “SQuire, you DIDNT GET your ‘PRAYER PARTNER.” I looked at him, puzzled. “We put the names of the entire congregation in a basket, and everyone picked out SOMEONE TO PRAY FOR this week.” I was hesitant as he again pushed the basket toward me. “I already have a ‘prayer partner’⎯two of them⎯Belle and Bruce Reynolds,” I said weakly. He smiled, still extending the basket. “But, I continued, I guess we can have always have MORE. I pulled out one of the three SLIPS in the basket. Unfolded it. And read the contents. My MOUTH must have DROPPED. Out of 600 church members, I selected: “BELLE AND BRUCE REYNOLDS!” •••• I always say PRAYER WORKS! But, LIKE YOU, Im often surprised at HOW God works things out. I’ve always loved that little story, published in my first When God Winks book. Have a wonderful, godwink filled day. SQ
