DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR After several months of not having a Sunday - TopicsExpress

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR After several months of not having a Sunday free due to rehearsals and the show what does one do on their first Sunday off ...one goes to the Theatre!!! John and I took ourselves to the City to see King Kong. We were both blown away from the first moment by the magic, spectacle and brilliance of this Production. I often think that some elements of both pro and amateur in this city are a little precious and try to be too intellectual and have themselves so wrapped up with being clever and on trend that they have forgotten that musical theatre is there to entertain first and inform second. I firmly believe that we could all enjoy this thing that we all profess to love so much more if we just went along to be entertained and forgot about the rest. I know it has been popular to have a go at this production and run it down for the story line and the music and I agree to a certain extent that the music is not overly memorable and I thought the rocky tendency of most of the ballads grated at first and did not seem to match the era in which the story is set. When the Second act opening number reminded me of Parts of the movie Moulin Rouge I then got what they were getting at. Any one who has seen any version of King Kong will be aware that the Story is a lot thin and it is always the Gorilla who carries it. Perhaps my tastes are simple and I am easily pleased but I thank god I am still reasonably in touch with my inner child and am able to give myself fully to and get lost in the fantasy of this show and get carried away on a mystic cloud of magic with the extraordinary spectacle this show is. K.K. is an amazing feat of technical and puppeteering brilliance and steals the show. If you allow yourself to you do not see the puppeteers after awhile and if you suspend belief you start to believe that Kong is real. The Cast did there very best with the material they were given and at times there were moments of brilliance. My hat goes off to Queenie Van De Zandt who played Cassandra her voice was amazing a few times it made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. The staging using the hydraulics the, 3D suspended sets, the fantastic costumes, the great choreography and most of all the fantastic and awe inspiring electronic cyclorama wall that was used spectacularly in the most fabulous way all added to make this one of the best times I have spent in the theatre for some years. I was a little worried that the money the tickets cost may have been a waste but in my mind this show was worth every cent. Well that"s my rant for the day but I really hope that people give this original production a look at for what it is, be proud that it is Australian conceived, produced and staged and wish it all the best for the future because it deserves to be picked up in both London and Broadway. The world needs to see what we can do in this Country.
