DO in exports – Delivery Order in Export trade The term ‘Delivery order’ (D.O) in export trade is the document issued by carrier of goods to pick up the empty container for stuffing export cargo. Once after finalizing the carrier, the shipper books the container with shipping line to load the container. The carrier is decided either by shipper or consignee depends up on terms of delivery of goods. However, booking of empty container for loading of cargo is done by shipper or his agent. Normally, empty containers belongs to each shipping lines are parked separately in most of the locations. Each shipping line has a record of empty containers at each location with container number and the place of location where these empty containers available. Now a days most of shipping lines at major locations monitor inventory management electronically. Once after booking container electronically or manually by shipper or their agent, the carrier allots empty container for stuffing by issuing a document called ‘Delivery Order’. The empty container number, location of container availability and other details of shipment are mentioned in such delivery order along with the terms and conditions of carrier. Once after receiving delivery order from carrier, the exporter or his agent can arrange trailer transport to load the said empty container at carrier’s yard by submitting said delivery order.
