The Month of the Documentary brings visibility to these works often unknown. ------------------------- Films and screening schedule ------------------------- 28 Nov 2013, 7.00 pm at LAMAKAAN NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT [NOSTALGIE DE LA LUMIÈRE] Director : Patricio Guzman 2010 - 90 min - 35 mm – Color “Patricio Guzmáns Chilean documentary Nostalgia for the Light is moving: it has a tragic grandeur that really is very remarkable. It is deeply intelligent, intensely and painfully political, and yet attempts, and succeeds, somehow to transcend politics and perhaps even history itself.” - Peter Bradshaw for The Guardian Synopsis Chiles high Atacama Desert is one of those rare places where the earth seems truly to touch the sky. Located 10,000 feet above sea level, the deserts remoteness and the extraordinary fact that it is the driest place on earth, with zero percent humidity, give it some of the clearest skies on the planet. Astronomers come from all over the globe to peer through the worlds biggest telescopes to the very edge of time and space, hoping to discover the secrets of the cosmos. But the Atacama holds other secrets underfoot. Its dry soil has preserved layers of human remains, from pre-Columbian mummies to the bones of 19th-century explorers to the corpses of political prisoners disappeared by the Chilean army under General Augusto Pinochet after the military coup of September 1973. In this otherworldly place, earthly and celestial quests meld: Archaeologists dig for ancient civilizations, women search for their loved ones and astronomers scan the skies for new galaxies. Nostalgia for the Light is a meditation on memory, history and eternity. NOSTALGIA FOR THE LIGHT is not only Guzmán’s masterpiece; it is one of the most beautiful cinematographic efforts we have seen for a long time. Its complex canvas is woven with the greatest simplicity. For forty years, Patricio Guzman has had to struggle every inch of the way, with a vivid memory and intimate suffering to reach this work of cosmic serenity, of luminous intelligence, with a sensitivity that could melt stone. At such a level, the film becomes more than a film. An insane accolade to mankind, a stellar song for the dead, a life lesson. Silence and respect. -- Jacques Mandelbaum ,for Le Monde Winner, Best Film, 2011 International Documentary Association (IDA) Winner, Award of Merit in Film, 2012 Latin American Studies Association (LASA) Winner Best Documentary, Prix ARTE, 2010 European Film Academy Awards Winner Best Documentary, 2010 Abu Dhabi Film Festival Patricio Guzmán Lozanes (b. 1941) is an internationally renowned Chilean documentary film director. They recall life-changing moments as readily as the most trivial memories. Hopes and dreams are described alongside an often heightened sense of life’s pains and sorrows. French artist, photographer and former solo navigator Titouan Lamazou made 15 three-month trips on five continents to record women’s stories in words and in images. His unique and moving portraits also reveal the direction our societies are taking. The finished portraits (composed of sketches, paintings, landscape and portrait photographs arranged as large-scale collages) went on show at the Paris Musée de l’Homme and were collected in 50 four-minute profiles. ------------------------- 1 Dec 2013, 7.00 pm at LAMAKAAN THE WORDS OR DEATH [LA PAROLE OU LA MORT] Director : Abraham Segal 2009 – 1hr 37min – Color Synopsis The Word or Death is an investigation into the dangerous links between politics and religion, between religions and sciences. How can the same words from the Bible or the Koran incite hatred, murder and sacrifice and also light the way to wisdom and life? At the dawn of the 21st century, we are struck by the explosive force of mix between Bibical or Koranic verses, political messages and murderous acts that enflame wars “in the name of God”. But the words can also awaken, they can illuminate the spirit and weave bonds over frontiers.
