DOE Starts Collecting State Certifications for the Determinations on Energy Codes Posted in 2012 IECC, ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010, Code Development, Department of Energy (DOE), Energy Conservation and Production Act (ECPA), In the News, Residential, Commercial on September 20, 2013 by Anonymous On May 31, 2013, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) released its determination letters to states, requesting certifications on demonstrating whether the state’s building energy codes’ energy efficiency meet or exceed that of the latest energy codes. DOE is required by law, the Energy Conservation and Production Act (ECPA), to collect important data on building energy codes and to issue a determination as to whether the latest edition of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 (for commercial and multi-family high-rise residential buildings) and the latest version of the International Energy Conservation Code (for low-rise residential buildings) will improve energy efficiency compared to the previous edition of the corresponding standards or codes. The intention is to offer assistance on development and implementation of each state’s building energy codes, so that states can achieve greater energy efficiency and their households and businesses can save more money, grow jobs, and improve the environment from using energy more efficiently. States must submit certifications and/or apply for Requests for Extension of Deadlines on the latest code; with regard to ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2010, the due date is October 18, 2013 and with regard to the 2012 IECC, May 17, 2014. If states need any assistance in meeting the certification requirements, DOE provides technical assistance, including policy guidance, code compliance software, analytical support, as well as some incentive funding.
