DOG TAILS - ALL ABOUT DACHSHUNDS August 17, 2013 @ 4:29 PM The dachshund breed of dog is of German origin. They were originally bred to scent, flush out and dig out burrowing animals. The miniature form of this breed hunts out rabbits and prairie dogs in the same manner. They are the only breed to hunt both above and below the ground. Dachshunds are considered to be part of the hound dog group. Considered one of the top 10 breeds in the United States, the full grown dachshund will weigh 16 to 32 pounds. The miniature version has a weight of less than 12 pounds when full grown. As this is a smaller breed of dog, they have a life expectancy of 15 to 17 years. They have short legs with paddle shaped paws for digging, long bodies and deep large chests. Classified by their coats, they have smooth, long haired or wire haired versions. There are several types of colorings for this breed including single color, single color with dark spots and single color with tan spots. The most common color for the dachshund in black and tan mixed. They are a breed of average intelligence compared to other breeds. They are playful, stubborn, very determined and can be a challenge to train. This breed is known to be agressive with strangers and other dogs. They dislike being left alone and often whine. As they are known as diggers, they love to burrow into blankets or dog beds. Being a clever and lively breed they can make a good family pet. Better to introduce to the family as puppy. They will also appreciate another dog in the family so they are not left alone. Ailments know to effect this breed are spinal problems like disk disease when the spine becomes inflamed due to over activity like jumping they should be confined to a dog crate and given anti-inflamatory meds. Also brittle bones, dislodged kneecaps, epilepsy, dental issues and heart disease. DOG TAIL TIP OF THE DAY: If you are a family considering this breed for a pet, it would be best to get them as a puppy so the children and dog can grow up together.
