DOGGY BAG OF LICKS AND CHOPS: Theres magic in impromptu - TopicsExpress

DOGGY BAG OF LICKS AND CHOPS: Theres magic in impromptu collaborative arrangements, especially when its a coalition of troupers in the likes of Wally Gonzalez, Louie Talan, Wendell on drums, Pepe Smith, Clare Lapus and myself poring over the lines of a brand new song by Bong Sotto. The song purifies itself from its sincerity; when you are faced with such a song, the formula for success is the adage less is more. And so one by one, we laid down our tracks unlearning the cliches that we usually bring in our doggy bags of licks and chops...no MIDI... no sequencers...just straightforward playing that was full of emotion from each hand-picked note that backed the song (wont mention the title for now). Last night at Wombworks, texture did the trick. The lyrics (in Tagalog) were written by Clare who also laid down a most compelling vocal track in her alto range. Theres something magical in unlearning music theory in favor of a well-crafted narrative in song. The prophet in me says major hit.
