DOME POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS AT RATT & SKA SA (National Research - TopicsExpress

DOME POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS AT RATT & SKA SA (National Research Foundation) National Research Foundation - Cape Town, Western Cape Contract The following specific subject areas will be targeted: Compressive sensing (CS) for interferometric calibration and imaging Machine learning (ML) techniques in radio data processing, calibration and imaging DOME-SA is an extension to the DOME collaboration between IBM and ASTRON in the Netherlands and is focused on exascale computing directed at the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). We seek to strengthen DOME-SA activities through these appointments. Rhodes University has established the Centre for Radio Astronomy Techniques and Technologies (RATT) based around the SKA Research Chair in RATT held by Prof Oleg Smirnov. RATT works in close collaboration with the Radio Astronomy Research Group (RARG) of SKA South Africa; these post-doctoral positions (as well as a number of current RATT researchers) are based at SKA SAs Cape Town offices. RATT conducts research into novel radio astronomy calibration, imaging, data analysis algorithms, software and techniques that are urgently required by the next generation of radio telescopes and by the science they are designed to deliver. We are looking for two kinds of candidates to fill the above positions: radio astronomers with a strong background in techniques, algorithms and software, and some background in CS or ML, or mathematicians and/or signal processing specialists with a very strong background in CS or ML. The positions therefore require a PhD in one of the related disciplines (astronomy, astrophysics, signal processing, mathematics, applied mathematics). The ideal candidate will have proven software development skills, and will have a strong interest in the development of new theoretical and applied techniques, and the applications of these to drive new science with current and future observatories. The candidate will be expected to work closely with other DOME researchers, as well as have the flexibility to travel overseas (ASTRON in the Netherlands, IBM research labs in Zurich, etc.) for up to one month at a time. Participation in observational programs with leading radio observatories (EVLA, LOFAR, E-MERLIN, GMRT, WSRT, ATCA, EVN, ALMA, ASKAP, etc.) will be encouraged, as well as collaboration with groups at South African universities that are actively involved in large surveys and projects using these instruments. In addition to their own research, the post-doctoral fellows are expected to supervise and co-supervise PhD and MSc students at RATT. The value of the fellowship is fixed at the standard SKA SA post-doctoral bursary level, which (as of 2014) is ZAR 327,000 per annum, tax-free. Additional equipment and travel funding will be available. The appointment is for two years, with a one-year extension subject to satisfactory progress. Interested candidates should submit a CV, bibliography, brief summary of research, and three letters of recommendation by August 1, 2014. Applications will start to be considered from that date until the position is filled. Inquiries, applications and letters of recommendation should be sent to Prof Oleg Smirnov,[email protected] The ideal candidate will have the following competencies: Ability set up a research network manage and directing scientific programmes and projects strategic programme development management of scientific proposals Experience liaison and participation with key stakeholders Knowledge new opportunities in research human capacity development programmes engineering project management
