DONT AXE OUR GREEN OASIS Work to fall trees in Sheffield has faced a backlash – over the removal of ‘healthy’ species to stop roots disturbing paths. Residents on Woodseats House Road, Woodseats, are questioning why the pavement surface could not be raised and the ‘boulevard’ of mature lime trees retained. The trees are deemed a ‘health and safety risk’ and are among 1,250 being removed across the city. Trees chopped down are being replaced with new species, although not always in the same location. Nick Horne, aged 46, said he and his family chose to move to Woodseats House Road, because of the ‘green boulevard’ – which he says will be ‘spoilt’ without the trees. He said: “There are healthy trees which are 80 years old, and new ones will take a while to grow to the same size. “I don’t know why the pavements cannot be raised so the roots are covered and the surface is smooth. “It seems a waste of money and effort to take them down.” However, Sheffield Council contractor Amey claims pavements could not be raised without damaging the roots and that the problems could occur again in future years. The company said only two of the five trees on the street will be chopped down. Jeremy Willis, Amey arboricultural operations manager, said: “We are removing two lime trees on Woodseats House Road because they are damaging the pavement and causing trip hazards. “We will replace them with two new lime trees aged about seven years old and of a variety less likely to cause damage. “They will be planted early in the New Year in slightly different locations on the same street. “We know people feel strongly about trees and do not take the decision to remove a tree lightly. “We look at factors including health of the tree and damage The Star
