DONT GIVE UP On March 29, 1925 several African-American leaders (including the superintendent of African American schools) in Charleston, W.V. protested the scheduled engagement of The Birth of a Nation for April 1 at the Rialto Theater. They argued it violated a 1919 state law prohibiting any entertainment which demeaned another race. The Mayor and the W.V. Supreme Court supported their argument and prevented the showing of the film.
