DON’T BELIEVE IT... Is it possible that the reason there is so much rancor between people when it comes to politics, religion and, often, relationships (especially among family members), is that people tend to hear and pass along information (including gossip) before they have taken the time to personally investigate it, gather all the details and mindfully run it through the truth-filter of their deepest self. It’s quite easy to blindly accept the opinions of others, especially when they support our already predisposed beliefs and prejudices. We make so many assumptions based on unfounded information: Just because it is on the internet, or in a book, or what grandpa or our favorite talk show host or politician believes, doesn’t mean it is accurate or true. The reasons we are so quick to believe what others say, teach, and preach, are legion: Perhaps many people don’t want to invest the time to step back, observe and analyze the information from an objective point of view because they are simply too lazy to do so. Perhaps it’s because if they do take the time to consider the issue with no bias they fear they may discover a truth that doesn’t serve their personal agenda. Perhaps people just want to have someone else do their thinking for them and tell them what to believe because it’s far easier and less risky than taking responsibility for their own lives. Anyway you cut it Buddha’s wisdom is sage: Don’t believe it because he said it, don’t believe it because I said it, don’t believe it because Oprah, Chopra, Rush Limbaugh, or your favorite politician said it; the practice is to believe it because you have taken time to investigate it and that you have found logic and reason in it at the deepest core of your being and, perhaps most important, because it benefits all and harms none. It is a wise thing to be the captain of your own mind and heart. Peace, Dennis
