DON’T CONFUSE JUSTICE WITH VENGEANCE In a city hundreds of miles from Ferguson, a peaceful demonstrator in support of Mike Brown was quoted as saying, “I believe in this. I’m fighting to the end. We need peace and justice for everybody.” My response would be do you want justice or vengeance? While the outcome of the attack on a police officer was tragic, I wonder what demonstrations would have followed if Mike had been successful in his attempt to take the gun and seriously injure the officer. Justice, if it prevailed in that scenario, would mean that he would have been arrested for attempted murder of a police officer. Until there is a better way to settle our disagreements we should never have the attitude, “don’t confuse me with the facts.” Racial tension today is the result of politicians in high places refusing to acknowledge that we have made great strides toward solving the issues of inequality but we still have a long way to go. Until then, we have a constitution which is color blind but that fact is ignored in Washington D.C. Officer Darren Wilson will live with his decision for the rest of his life. According to the transcript of the grand jury he acted lawfully. This incident haunts me and makes me want to ask, “Suppose Officer Wilson was black. How would this have turned out then?” Evil is in the world; it has contaminated our logic, penetrated our pulpits and distorted our faith. Inequality is one of the great problems of the USA but it is not a Christian doctrine which validates the mistreatment of others because of skin color. More godly people need to rise above this ugly act of godlessness and speak boldly and loudly. God give us another Martin Luther King, Jr., in this generation because Christians are held to a higher standard in our thoughts AND actions.
