DON’T LET THE COMMIES KILL SANTA: In 1961, at the height of the Cold War, eight-year-old Michelle Rochon, concerned about the safety of Santa Claus after hearing about possible Soviet nuclear tests at the North Pole, wrote a letter to President Kennedy, who responded with words of comfort. This bit of heartwarming Cold War history is reported on in the Huffington Post, with a link to a 2007 television clip from “Good Morning America” where Rochon, then in her 50s, meets the late president’s daughter, Caroline Kennedy. The president’s letter to Rochon in 1961 appears in Caroline Kennedy’s compilation of holiday memories, “A Family Christmas,” which is available for checkout through the Pasadena Public Library.
