DOT PRESS RELEASE: Photo | Video LONDON’S COMMUTERS DIVE INTO CAYMAN Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands (July 4, 2014) Stingray City 3D artwork commissioned by the UK office of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism tours iconic London landmarks Cayman’s famous Stingray City was brought to the streets of London this week through a piece of interactive 3D artwork. Commissioned by the UK office of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism, the artwork depicts the gentle rays of Stingray City as it toured London’s iconic locations, bringing the beauty of the islands to UK shores. The Stingray City 3D image gives the illusion to bystanders that the street beneath them has opened up and they are peering down upon the rays which throng in this unique area of the Caribbean Sea. The art toured London on 1st July and members of the public interacted with the art by kissing the rays and capitalising on the resulting seven years’ of good luck which Caymanian folklore tells of. And, as luck would have it, one of the first families to stop by on the day was the Broderick and Briggs family from Cayman! A social media campaign was also launched, entering those who uploaded images using the #CaymanKissed hashtag into a competition for the chance to win a diving experience for two. The UK is a key market for Cayman tourism within Europe. In 2013 British visitors rose by 6.4% as Brits came to discover the hidden gems of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. The interactive 3D artwork has been commissioned to further promote the islands as a holiday destination to UK travellers and following its launch in London, the 3D artwork will go on to tour other key markets to engage audiences across the US and Canada. Don McDougall, Regional Manager of the Cayman Islands Department of Tourism in the UK commented: “It’s wonderful to see Cayman’s iconic Stingray City right here in London. The campaign draws on the power of experiential publicity, social media and traditional PR to give Londoners the opportunity to interact with this unique Cayman attraction, bringing a slice of the islands right to their doorsteps. Our marketing, PR and advertising efforts in the UK are focused on building awareness of what the Cayman Islands have to offer in order to directly increase visits. Using interactive 3D artwork we have brought to life the story of Stingray City in an exciting way, and this memorable experience will keep Cayman front of mind when people are making their holiday booking decisions.”
