DOUGLAS COUNTY WINTER WEATHER INFORMATION UPDATE: Wednesday, January 29th, 5:00 p.m. CURRENT CONDITIONS The State of Emergency continues in effect for Douglas County and the State of Georgia, and will remain in effect until 12 noon on Thursday. Solid sheets of compacted ice and snow continue on many roads and bridges. This continues to cause extremely hazardous roadway conditions. Solar radiation and surface sanding/salting from DOT crews significantly improved road conditions in Douglas County on Wednesday afternoon. However, temperatures are still below freezing wind a slight wind chill and are predicted to dip to 15 degrees tonight. Temperatures will not get above freezing until about noon on Thursday. Please be very aware of road conditions, especially black ice. If you do not have to travel, please stay at home and off the roads. Please limit your travels to emergency needs. Roads are still not safe. The Douglas County DOT continues to work 24 hours a day salting/sanding and clearing County roads. Major roads are in better shape than more rural and less-traveled roads. If possible, stay off Riverside Parkway and Anneewakee Road. Do not call 911 to ask about roadway conditions. Calls to 911 should be only for emergencies. Douglas County E911 has received over 4,000 calls in the past 36 hours. WEATHER-RELATED CLOSINGS The Douglas County Courthouse, Libraries, Parks and Recreation, Landfill, Animal Shelter and all external services and programs will be closed Thursday, January 30th, due to the winter weather. Douglas County E911, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Fire/EMS, Douglas County DOT, Douglas County Emergency Management, and Douglas County Communications will be open, active and serving the public. The Sheriff’s Department Administrative Offices will be closed. The Douglas County Employee Service Awards Luncheon scheduled for Thursday, January 30th, has been postponed until a later date. The Douglas County School System will be closed Thursday, January 30th for all students and staff, including 240-day employees. The County-wide School System Spelling Bee scheduled for Friday, January 31st, has been postponed until a later date. Georgia Regional Transportation Authority (GRTA) Xpress Bus service has been canceled for Thursday, January 30th. Douglasville City Hall is open only for vital business. Douglasville Municipal Court has been canceled for Thursday, January 20th. All cases will be rescheduled. The Annual Meeting of the Friends of the Dog River Library scheduled for Thursday night, January 30th, has been postponed. Douglas County Public Health offices on Selman Drive will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, January 30th.
