DPP appoints TRA legal counsels to check tax offenders June 22 2014 The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has appointed 28 senior legal counsels from the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to prosecute tax offenders. The appointment was made under Government Notice No. 117 published on May 16, this year. Their appointment will enable the 17-year-old revenue agency to prosecute tax offenders in courts of law. Before the appointment of prosecutors from the TRA, tax offences were prosecuted by State Attorneys.Appointment of TRA’s legal counsels – the first time since the agency was launched in June , 1996 comes at the time when the government has put its best foot forward – determined – to fight, tooth and nail, against the stubborn tax evaders singularly and organised. “After several years of grilling locally and abroad in the state of the art of prosecution, legal counsels in TRA’s Legal Service Department are now ripe to undertake this herculean task,” said one of the top-brass members of the department.
