DPWH PURSUES P5-B FLOOD CONTROL PROJECTS “We did not stop the P5 Billion high priority impact flood control projects included in our Flood Management Master Plan for Metro Manila and its surrounding in Central Luzon and Laguna Lake.” DPWH Secretary Rogelio L. Singson issued this statement after a national newspaper has published a story, titled, “DPWH stops P5-B flood control works.” “Contrary to the published story, we are relentlessly pursuing these projects as planned and on schedule especially at this point in time when the country is bracing against strong typhoons, just two days ago, typhoon Glenda,” said Secretary Singson. “We have witnessed the positive effects of these flood control projects during the onslaught of typhoon Glenda. Although, some parts of Metro Manila have been inundated, the water level was not as high as the usual floods experienced before,” said Singson. Accordingly, based on reports, several high impact flood control projects included in the P5 Billion are already completed. These are: two (2) projects on Manila Bay seawall costing P211.05 Million; six (6) projects in Upper Marikina River improvement project (Nangka River) costing P222.50 Million; dredging along Marikina river costing P50 Million; dredging works along Mangahan Floodway costing P100 Million; four (4) projects for the construction of slope protection along Cainta and Taytay Rivers costing P190 Million; 5 out of 6 projects to include restoration of damaged slope protection along Marikina River, rehabilitation of Tullahan River, repair of damaged slope protection along Lakeshore Dike, and construction and repair of Napindan revetment wall costing P113 Million; 2 of 3 projects on the restoration and rehabilitation of San Fernando- Sto. Tomas-Minalin Tail dike costing P139 Million; construction of spillway No. 1 and spillway no, 3 including clearing and desilting/excavation of tributary rivers costing P637 Million; rehabilitation works on Del Carmen – Balimbing creek in San Fernando, Pampanga; and, dredging works along Orani Channel, Bataan costing P50 Million. On-going projects include 46 projects with an accomplishment of 81.84% in Valenzueal-Obando-Meycauayan project costing P1.53 Billion; 18 projects - 54% in Kalookan – Malabon – Navotas area costing P600 Million; and, dredging of Labangan Channel in Hagonoy, Bulacan – 78.2%. We also introduced coconet and vetiver grass for slope protection in Obando including the use of vinyl sheet piles. The DPWH is also undertaking convergence program with Laguna Lake Development Authority for the construction of river control structure at Sta. Maria – Mabitac River and Sta. Cruz-San Pedro-Biñan rivers costing P780 Million with an accomplishment of 92.52%. In addition, operation and maintenance of equipment of dredging equipment for Pasac Delta waterway in Guagua and Sasmuan, Pampanga worth P43.5 Million is on-going with an accomplishment of 19.5%. The Department has also started the study, preliminary engineering and detailed engineering designs of the Manila Bay breakwater extension.
