DR. BOBS DAILY: DID DR. BOB REALLY SAY THAT? I often forget - TopicsExpress

DR. BOBS DAILY: DID DR. BOB REALLY SAY THAT? I often forget the power of words and the influence a doctor can have over patients. I saw a couple today for a consultation about their childs special diet. We had the child on a gluten-free diet and were seeing some good results. But the child kept questioning every food item that the parents wouldnt let him eat. Each time he would ask, Did Dr. Bob really say I couldnt eat that? Each time he (surprisingly) accepted the fact that I said he couldnt eat it. But he kept asking, day in and day out, and kept accepting the ruling because it came from me. Of course, this wont work with every child. But Ive started doing this more often over the past few years. I used to just give the parents the instructions. But now, whenever I need children to cooperate with a treatment or lifestyle change, I give them the instructions directly. Everything from Dont watch too much TV - it will make your brain mushy to eat a vegetable from every color of the rainbow every week. Im surprised at how often the parents tell me it actually works. This family was a good reminder. So, if you want me to dish out some dos and donts at your childs next checkup, slip me a little note with a detailed list. I charge an extra 5 bucks, but itll be worth it. Wish it would work on my own kids . . . or my wife . . . oh well. Dr. Bob
