DR. BOBS DAILY: WHY IS DOWNTON ABBEY SO FASCINATING? Cheryl - TopicsExpress

DR. BOBS DAILY: WHY IS DOWNTON ABBEY SO FASCINATING? Cheryl and I routinely watch several shows. If I had my choice wed watch nothing but Sci Fi. Back before we were married she pretended to like Star Trek, until she had that ring on her finger. Now I have to make my teens watch it with me if I dont want to watch it alone. Thank God I have boys. But one show that we just cant seem to get enough of is Downton Abbey. What the heck? All they do is stand around and talk, in various changes of clothing depending on the time of day and what meal is coming up. Thats it. No phasers. No transporters. Nothing happens in space at all. So why do I love it so much? Why do I groan at the end of each episode because its over and I have to wait a whole week for the next show? Is Mrs. Patmore going to have dinner ready on time? Is Mr. Molesley going to carry tea and cakes upstairs all in one tray by himself or is he going to ask for help? What exactly did Anna buy for Lady Mary from the Apothecary? And is the Earls beloved cricket field really going to be turned into a garden? Ive no idea why these suspenseful family and social dilemmas are so fascinating. Maybe its simply because it is so opposite of what life is like today. For me, I think its the draw of a quiet, uncomplicated life that we all wish we could have. Its been a crazy, busy week in the office since the New Year. I guess I just like to sit down and watch people do nothing for an hour. Maybe its the British accents that puts the icing on the cake and makes me hang on every word. Whatever it is, thanks PBS. Its nice to have something good to watch that doesnt involve crime, cooking, and (I suppose) space once in a while. Dr. Bob
