DR Congo - In the past 15 years, the Democratic Republic of Congo has seen a significant increase of pastoralist groups, namely the Mbororo, in the North-East province of Orientale. The Mbororo have become a migration and security concern for the DR Congo as their presence in the region is causing a rise in tensions with the local population. The situation between the Mbororo and the local residents has recently escalated and is threatening the stability in the region. IOM in the DR Congo has taken the lead and has been working with the international community and with the Congolese government on the issue. Over the past year, IOM has met with United Nations partners, including the Civil Affairs Section of the MONUSCO, as well as with Representatives of the DR Congo Government, to collaborate and exchange information on the Mbororo. IOM is also currently working on the creation of a Working Group to harmonize the international community’s approach and to advocate on behalf of the Mbororo and the other vulnerable populations in the region. With the help of organizations such as OCHA, UNHCR, and MONUSCO, and in collaboration with the Government of the DR Congo, IOM hopes to provide assistance and raise awareness on the situation of the Mbororo in the country. In fact, the International Crisis Group (ICG) has recently published a report on pastoralism in Central Africa in which it sollicits the IOM’s help in dealing with the matter of the Mbororo.
