DRAFT MEDIA RELEASE FROM CABINET CHAMBERS Cabinet has taken the following decisions at its 19th Ordinary Meeting that took place on 26 November 2013. 1. THE APPOINTMENT OF THE NEW COMMISSIONERS OF THE SOCIAL SECURITY COMMISSION Cabinet took note of the appointment of new members of the Social Security Commission and gave approval to the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare to notify the public accordingly in the Government Gazette. BACKGROUND AND DISCUSSIONS The Social Security Act, No. 34 of 1994 provides for the establishment of a commission to be known as the Social Security Commission. The Commission shall consist of ten members who will represent the interests of the State (Ministry of Health and Social Services, Ministry of Finance and two persons nominated by the Minister of Labour and Social Welfare); three persons represent the Trade Unions and three from the employers’ Organizations. The term of office is for the remainder of the unexpired period of these three years served and shall at the expiration of that period be eligible for re-appointment. The term of office of the current Commissioners shall expire on the 31 of December 2014. The following are the nominated new members of the Commission to serve for the remainder of the unexpired period, starting on the 1st of January 2014. Bishop Dr. Z.
