DRAFT NOTES - RHESUS STATUS If a mother is rhesus positive - TopicsExpress

DRAFT NOTES - RHESUS STATUS If a mother is rhesus positive (85% of mothers) then her red blood cells have an antigen on them that is recognised by the immune system. If a mother is rhesus negative, her red blood cells do not have this antigen. Usually 15%? of pregnancy the fetus is rhesus positive in a rhesus negative mother. In this situation the mother produces antibodies against the blood cells that are rhesus positive ie the baby’s blood cells. These antibodies are igM in first pregnancy. Igm can not cross the placenta. So the baby is fine?? However if the rhesus negative mother falls pregnant 2nd time (and beyond) the mother’s immune system now produces IgG too. IgG can cross the placenta hence the baby can be harmed. In this situation a mother is given anti-D. REFERENCE: Typed up from memory post teaching from a consultant obstetrician. MNEMONIC Rhesus Status is checked on weeks 28 Surah 28 is Al Qasas A key theme in this surah is Musa AS (Moses Pbuh). In the begining of the surah mention is made of Musa and his MOTHER. I use this to remember week 28 is MOTHER and CHILD, MUSA and MOTHER, Rhesus status is checked.
