DRCPP has been awarded a four-year grant from the New York City - TopicsExpress

DRCPP has been awarded a four-year grant from the New York City Department of Health and Mental Health (DOHMH) to launch a training program to help medical providers in Harlem, South Bronx, East New York and South Jamaica deliver culturally competent and effective HIV prevention, treatment and care to formerly incarcerated persons. Known as The Re-entry Education Project (REP), this is the first time DRCPP has led a health-focused outreach initiative. We are excited about the potential to reduce barriers to care that ex-inmates often experience in medical settings and to ensure their voices are heard and needs are met. The necessity for REP is clear. HIV rates in NYC jails are almost four times higher than in the “general population.” Upon release, those with HIV/AIDS return to communities in which poverty, addiction and poor health are often prevalent. They have a hard time getting appropriate health services – especially when they lack basic things like housing, work and food. The objectives of REP are to:1) increase the number of formerly incarcerated people who know their HIV status, and 2) increase retention in care and viral suppression of those with HIV/AIDS. REP utilizes an “academic detailing” model to share evidence-based practices with doctors, nurses, physicians and social workers via one-on-one and small group meetings in NYC hospitals and clinics. REP will also use a website, monthly newsletters and social media to reinforce the in-person sessions. Staff are developing messages and gathering resource materials for the trainings that will begin in September. With constant input and guidance from formerly incarcerated persons, DRCPP is working to ensure that ex-inmates have access to high quality HIV prevention, treatment and care needs services that will help them live a healthy life. For more information about REP, please contact Sue Simon [email protected] or Jonathan Stribling-Uss [email protected] at (212) 691-7554.
