DREAMERS (EXCERPT) In Hawaii......Waikiki The next morning I was back in my room writing notes to go with the gifts to be mailed to my family. The door to my deck on the 20th floor was open. I looked up and six grey doves and one white dove landed on the deck. The white one, bold as brass, walked into my room and began pecking at the carpet. It worked its way over to my desk and, as I watched in surprise, it pecked at my sandals. This made my gifts seem more appropriate. For some reason I thought back to my roommate in Nevada. She was not a romantic interest but had turned out to be a good friend. I knew that she was also a dreamer. She had overcome childhood diabetes to become the World Champion on the balance beam. However, just before the Olympic games she fell while giving a performance in Madison Square Garden. Her knee was ruined and had to be replaced with plates and springs made of metal. The accident ruined her career and could have ruined her life. However, this didnt stop her from dreaming and trying. She became a model for a make up company and was frequently on national television advertising their eye products. She had beautiful eyes. She donated all of her earnings to the Diabetes Foundation. The Actors Guild matched these contributions. Therefore, she multiplied her efforts to ease the lives of others so afflicted. She had never given up on her dreams and so conducted her life that others might live to be able to pursue theirs. With that in mind I wrote a letter to my sister telling her about my friend. Her son was nine years old and I reminded her to instill in him the desire, and to give him the freedom, to dream; that for many of us a few of our dreams will come true if we pursue them; that for a few of us most of our dreams will come true. However, we have to pursue those dreams!
