DREICH To aid pronunciation, the combination of the two letters - TopicsExpress

DREICH To aid pronunciation, the combination of the two letters “ch” at the end of a word sounds like the Arabic letter “خ”, which is often translated to “kh”, as in the word “sheikh”. The sound “خ” does not feature in the English language but is not uncommon in the Germanic and Scandinavian languages. The Scots can pronounce it OK as in the word Loch, which means Lake while the English pronounce it something like Loc. “Dreich” in the Scottish dialect is used to describe miserable cold gloomy weather condition. It said to be of Germanic origin corresponding to the Old Norse word “drjúgr”. There are countless words in the English language to translate the meaning of dreich, such as: Black, Dark, Dire, Dreary, Bleak, Dismal, Cloudy, Cold, Comfortless, Depressing, and many other words expressing unpleasant feelings. Watch these video clips and you will know exactly what dreich means (captured today, Sunday 26 October 2014, at 13:30 this afternoon around our house).
