DRUM TRACK OF THE DAY: Doralice by Stan Getz & João - TopicsExpress

DRUM TRACK OF THE DAY: Doralice by Stan Getz & João Gilberto featuring Milton Banana on drums This classic album, Getz/Gilberto, from 1964 created a bossa nova craze in both the United States and internationally. It brought together saxophonist Stan Getz, who had already performed the genre on his album Jazz Samba, Brazilian guitarist João Gilberto and one of the creators of the style, and Antonio Carlos Jobim, a celebrated Brazilian pianist and composer, and also another main creator of the genre who wrote most of the songs on the album. Getz/Gilberto became one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time and turned Astrud Gilberto, who sang on the tracks, The Girl from Ipanema and Corcovado, into an internationally celebrated musician. Brazillian drummer Milton Banana (born Antônio de Souza) was one of the seminal drummers of the bossa nova style of jazz. A self-taught musician, he was an extremely busy session player during the first period of bossa nova. He played on the historic Chega de Saudade (João Gilbertos debut album), the equally historic Getz/Gilberto, and recorded extensively with Tom Jobim, João Donato, and many others. He eventually went on to form and lead his own trio, releasing over a a dozen solo records. He continued performing until his death in 1998. Doralice is not as well known as some of the other tracks on this record but its one of our all-time favorites. Milton Banana plays the ultimate support role throughout the entire song right alongside João Gilbertos guitar work. Every drummer should take heed: THIS is how you support the music! Gilbertos vocals and Getzs melodic, spacious, and breathy sax solos become even more of a standout. A wonderful way to spend 2 minutes and 46 seconds. Truly one of the best musical collaborations in history!
