DRUM TRACK OF THE DAY: Sing Sing Sing (with a Swing) by Benny Goodman featuring Gene Krupa 77 years ago today, this landmark performance was recorded at Carnegie Hall in New York City. On January 16, 1938, Benny Goodman, the great clarinetist, performed with his band featuring legendary drummer Gene Krupa at Carnegie Hall, making them the first jazz act to play the famed venue. The performance included the classic Sing, Sing, Sing featuring Gene Krupa. The song has been heralded as the first to include an extended drum solo in jazz. This concert has been regarded as one of the most significant in jazz history. After years of work by musicians from all over the country, jazz had finally been accepted by mainstream audiences. The show sold out weeks before with the capacity 2,760 seats going for the top price of $2.75 a seat, a very high price for the time. Recordings were made of this concert, but even by the technology of the day, the equipment used was not of the finest quality. In 1950, Goodman took some newly discovered recordings of the concert to his record company and released them as the album, The Famous 1938 Carnegie Hall Jazz Concert. It was one of the first records of Benny Goodman music issued on the new long-playing (LP) format and one of the first to sell over a million copies. It also is the first ever double album. This album was also sold in a set of nine 45 rpm records in the same year. Last March, Gene Krupa was voted one of The 50 Greatest Drummers of All Time by the readers of Modern Drummer Magazine. Yesterday marked what would have been his 106th birthday.
