DRUMMOND DOES THE DOUBLE ON DEBUT Hawkes Bay’s 19-year old Dean Drummond had a great debut NZ Professional Bowls Association weekend winning both the Scottish International Open Singles qualifier and a Ranking Pairs event accounting for Trans Tasman PBA champion Murray Glassey in the final of the singles 6-7, 9-1, 2-0. Drummond teamed with Gavin Keighley to beat the experienced Bart Sorensen and Ken Smith in the pairs. His wins capped off an exciting weekend for the young guns with another impressive debut performance from 20-year old Elliot Mason in Dunedin coming runner-up in both the Scottish and Ranking Singles events at the Westpac Stadium, and another 20-year old Sheldon Bagrie-Howley reaching the final of the Scottish qualifier at the Waverley Bowling Club in Invercargill. Mason pushed PBA Internationals Ken Walker and Aidan Lusby to tiebreakers in his two finals, while Bagrie-Howley bowed to the relentless draw play of Bronwyn Stevens in their Scottish qualifier. Wellington’s Rob Ashton completed a double by winning both the Scottish Singles qualifier and the novel Shanghai Singles qualifier at the Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club in Auckland becoming the first player to book his place in two events at Finals Weekend in Hastings in September. Ashton beat another Wellingtonian Brent Stubbins in his PBA debut weekend in both finals. The titanic struggles between Wayne Stewart and Raika Gregory over the previous two days took a back seat to a winning debut performance from Hamilton coordinator Henry Te Moni and his partner Doug O’Brien to win the Ranking Pairs event at the Frankton Railway Bowling Club in Hamilton.
