DStv over IP – big plans in the pipeline Multichoice is planning to send their DStv signal directly from its head office in Randburg to Teraco in Isando via a fibre link, making it possible for Smart Village to distribute its DStv over IP service directly to its subscribers from their Teraco point of presence (PoP). Smart Village COO Adrian Maguire explained that their DStv over IP service currently uses a satellite broadcast signal received via a centrally located satellite dish at each of the locations where it offers the service. The signal is converted to IP (via a DVB over IP head end), and then distributed to individual DStv IP decoders over Smart Village’s fibre network. Maguire explained that the planned fibre-based delivery between Multichoice and Smart Village’s Teraco PoP will increase quality, and limit the impact of weather and service levels. The planned system will also make it possible for Smart Village to manage their DStv over IP system from a single location. DStv’s IP service also have added benefits in terms of pricing and channel flexibility available to hotels, hospitals, and retirement villages. Maguire said that they expect the new fibre-based signal delivery to be operational in mid-2014. DStv over IP network requirements Maguire said that Smart Village currently has over 2,500 DStv over IP users, which are connected via fibre to the premise (FTTx) connections. The DStv over IP decoder will soon offer two viewing and one recording channel, and each channel requires 18Mbps to ensure the smooth delivery of HD content. Compensating for overhead, it is not surprising that Smart Village uses 100Mbps connections to deliver the service.
