DTI, DOE sustain campaign on energy conservation By: Pilar S. Mabaquiao SAN JOSE, Antique Oct 22 (PIA) - - The Department of Trade and Industry conducted a Seminar on Consumer Awareness featuring the campaign on energy conservation and efficiency and safe use of liquefied petroleum gas. Provincial Director Lea T. Gonzales, DTI said this year’s Consumer Welfare month highlights the government campaign on energy conservation with the theme, “Sapat na Impormasyon, Susi sa Wastong Paggamit ng Enerhiya.” In a forum attended by various groups business owners, students, senior citizens, information officers, cooperatives, academe, local government units and media representing the consumer sector, Engr. Rey Malesa and Thelma Agagas of the Department of Energy talked about the safe use of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and tips on energy conservation and efficiency. For energy conservation and efficiency Agagas, discussed some measures to save electricity and maximize efficiency of air conditioner, refrigerator, flat iron, washing machine and other household appliances using electricity. She advised the consumers to buy appliances with higher Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), or the yellow label attached on the appliances. The higher EER the lesser electricity it consumes. It is also important that the appliances are kept clean and regular maintenance is done. Agagas also told the participants about the Phantom Load or electrical device operating 24 hours/day 365 days/year, even if the device is turned off. These are the glowing red lights indicating the appliance is on standby mode like TV, microwave, clock, cordless phone, digibox, answering machine, VCD/DVD player, hi-fi stereo, AVR & power adapter. She said, instead of putting the appliances on standby mode, simply pull the plug to reduce operating hours. On the other hand, Malesa emphasized that LPG should be handled carefully to avoid accidents. Only authorized refill stations and dealers are allowed to sell LPG. This also includes proper transport of LPG from the store to the households. It is essential that you know the care and safety tips of LPG to avoid accidents, Malesa said. (JCM/PSM/PIA6 Antique)
