DTi and DCI differences All diesel engines are direct injection. On the Dti engine with a multi-port fuel pump (where the injector pipes run directly from the fuel pump) the amount of fuel injected is determined inside the pump whereas on Dci engines the amount and timing of the injection is determined at the injectors where not only the amount can be altered but also when the fuel is injected. The main advantage of the Dci engine fitted with common rail injection is that it operates at a much higher pressure. This not only gives better economy but also much improved performance. What you have to remember is that a diesel engines burns it fuel (all be it at a rapid rate) whilst in a petrol engine the fuel is detonated (a mini explosion which is a much faster event) - therfore the maximum rpm of a diesel is somewhat restricted and one of the best ways to improve burn speed is to have the fuel forced in under greater pressure which ensures the fuel is sprayed in a finer spray thus mixing better with the oxygen for a faster burn. The fuel pressure on a multi-port pump is around 130 to 200 bar whereas an an electronic injector system the pressure begins at 300 bar and can go as high as 1350 bar if required. One other big advantage of high-pressure electronic injectors is much better cold starting. Bog standard pintle type injectors tend to work at a predetermined pressure whereas electronic injectrs can vary their pressure especially at times of high demand.:)
