DUKE UNIVERSITY PRESS INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT Would you like to learn more about the world of academic publishing? Duke University Press is looking for an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student in fields related to social science and humanities for a paid internship position working with its popular World Reader series. The World Readers, which are among our best-selling books, are complex anthologies of important primary and secondary source materials that present a broad overview of the history, culture, and politics of countries and cities around the world. Edited by prominent scholars, these dynamic collections aim to reach a broad trade, as well as academic, audience. This internship will give you an insider’s view on how collections are crafted and assembled, as well as the rights and permissions process involved. As a World Reader intern, you will work closely with the Reader editors, research and make contacts with scholars, artists, and repositories in the U.S. and abroad, and learn about the review and editorial process for academic books. In short, this internship offers a unique opportunity to build a range of skills vital to academic professionalization or future work in the field of publishing. We are currently looking for an intern to work on The Rio de Janeiro Reader, The Brazil Reader, and The Haiti Reader. A working knowledge of Portuguese, French, and/or Haitian Kreyol (or a related language) is a major plus, but mainly the job requires good organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and a working knowledge of basic office software such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat. The internship will be 10-15 hours per week, and pay depends on level of education. The hours are flexible, so we are happy to work around class schedules and teaching commitments. However, we do prefer someone who can commit to the full 2014-2015 academic year. On-going summer work opportunities may also be available. The job itself consists of: Working closely with the volume editors to assess and finalize permissions for texts and images. Contacting and negotiating with publishers and other rightsholders to secure permissions for publication. Organizing and assembling manuscript materials for the review process, and eventually for production and printing. Ensuring the accuracy of permissions-related material prior to production. Writing descriptions of the Readers for our Editorial Advisory Board. For more information, please contact Lorien Olive at [email protected]. If you are interested in applying, please send Lorien a one-page cover letter explaining your interests and qualifications, a CV, and three references (both work and academic, if possible). Selection of candidates for interviews will begin the week of August 11th. Thank you very much for your interest. We look forward to hearing from you! -- Lorien Olive Editorial Associate Duke University Press 919-687-3660 905 W. Main St., Suite 18B Durham, NC 27701
