Dad accused of breaking baby sons back too embarrassed to admit that he fell A DAD accused of deliberately breaking his six-week-old son’s bones told jurors he was too embarrassed to own up to tripping over and falling on the baby. Sean Cottrell, 22, is on trial accused of fracturing the leg and ribs of his baby boy as well as causing damage to his brain in multiple incidents. Prosecutors say that the ribs were probably broken by being squeezed, the spiral leg fracture was likely the result of being picked up by the leg and bleeding on the brain was probably the result of the brain being hit against the inside of his skull. But Cottrell, of Park Road South, Prenton, says the injuries occurred accidentally when he tripped over a bike and landed on the baby and that, if they were deliberate, as doctors have suggested, they must have been caused by the two women who also cared for him. The court heard the alleged accident happened on July 11 last year but the child was not taken to hospital until two days later. Janet Reaney, defending, asked Cottrell: “Did you say anything (about the fall)?” He replied: “No. I was too embarrassed I had fallen over with him.
