Daddy By Chet Davis © 2004 Daddy worked hard in the shop all day; When he came thru the door you could hear him sayin’, What’s for supper, Dear? Back in the sixties we didn’t have cable; At suppertime we all sat at the table, All nine of us there With no room to spare Sometimes we sat in silence; Sometimes the talk would fly Sometimes we kids got yelled at, Sometimes we laughed ‘til we cried Then Daddy sat down for the six o’clock news He’d pick up the paper then he’d star to snooze, at the drop of a hat We changed the channel when cartoons would start When the news switched off, Daddy woke with a start Sayin’, “Change that back, I was watchin’ that!” All Daddy wanted was to be obeyed, When we didn’t he would melt He’d throw out his arms, lift his head to heaven yellin’, “Don’t make me take off my belt!” I remember Daddy’s summer parties; Daddy was a joker and his laugh was hardy; everyone was there His parties didn’t end when we lost the light, We’d go to the kitchen and play Euchre all night I should mention here There was lots of beer Daddy loved his family, but he loved to party He loved to paint the town Once upon the time he couldnt wait ‘til the weekend’ Until one night when Mom brought him down Daddy said that he was gettin’ too damn old; The summers were too hot and the winters too cold In the Hoosier state Daddy took retirement, worked his final day He and Mamma argued ‘cause she wanted to stay, But Daddy couldn’t wait for the “Sunshine State” Sadly, I remember the day he died; It was the ninth of May We were all together like a summer party, Laughin’ ‘til he passed away Daddy worked hard in the shop all day When he came thru the door I can still hear him sayin’, After all these years, “What’s for supper, Dear”
