Daddy & Them 2001 R 1hr 41m On Netflix ( funny insightful ) When an Arkansas clan travels to Little Rock to help a recently jailed relative, family infighting erupts the minute they unpack their bags. Alright, so many disparate review, so who to believe? I believe that most if not all of those people who hated this movie are yankees that just dont get the humor due to cultural differences. Furthermore, I would venture to say that most if not all of those who hated the plot did not take the time to acknowledge the theme of the film. Its not just about dysfunctional alcholic rednecks- its about what happens when a family falls into a rut and fails to connect with one another. Also, those who complain about the foul language are simply failing to identify with the characters. Imagine trying to play the role of Scarface without foul language- its just not possible without losing the essence of the character. This movie was full of subtle jokes that may go over the heads of some, but make others laugh out loud. The acting and cast were tremendous, although as you will see in the bonus material one of the best scenes by Jim Varney was cut for time. You also get to see Andy Griffith step out of his usual typecast to play a senile codger with a wicked sense of humor and coarse language. A southerner like myslef cannot help but identify with these characters, which makes the film hilariously engaging. If you liked Slingblade, youre almost sure to like this one. And John Prine is at least as good an actor as Dwight Yoakam. Bottom line, if you cant identify with southerners you probably will not like this movie, but anyone else should really enjoy it. And be sure to stick around for the closing credits. John Prine (who plays Alvin, the voice of reason) wrote a duet with Iris DeMent called In Spite of Ourselves especially for this movie, which summarizes the main characters nicely. *** FYI to correct a previous reviewer: This movie was actually created before Slingblade, but was shelved for 3-4 years before being released on Showtime and on video, so this is actually BBTs directorial debut, even though it was released after Slingblade. youtu.be/F5axlwCBXC8
