Daddys Newspaper Article For This Week: “The disciples were called Christians first in Antioch” (Acts 11:26). Disciples of Christ were people who learned of Christ, believed in His divine authority, obeyed His instructions, and thus became followers and servants to Him. Merely claiming to be His disciple did not make anyone a disciple. Jesus said, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed” (John 8:31). Consequently, “and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32). True disciples of Jesus Christ do not make and follow their own rules of faith, worship, and service. Neither do they declare themselves free from rules and restrictions. They submit themselves to the word of His grace, walk in the light as He is in the light, and live soberly, righteously and godly in this present world (Acts 20:32; 1 John 1:1-10; Titus 2:11-14). Christians are taught to be perfectly joined together in the same mind and judgment, to speak the same thing, to walk by the same rule and mind the same thing, and always strive to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace (1 Corinthians 1:10; Philippians 3:15,16; Ephesians 4:1-6). This can be accomplished only through adherence to the truth, through knowledge of the truth, and through handling aright the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15). Unity in Christ is achieved through sound doctrine (teaching) and submission to the authority of Christ exercised therein. In order for those who are approved of God- true Christians by Biblical definition- to be manifest, separation from sinful lifestyles, unscriptural religious practices and doctrines, and unholy alliances must be maintained as the Lord has said, “Therefore come out from among them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you shall be My sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty” (2 Corinthians 6:17,18). Are we really saints, or have we joined hands with the disobedient, unruly, disbelieving world in which we live? Gilbert Alexander Valley View Church of Christ
