Dads/ Allens post-op surgery update: Open heart surgery went well and Dad now has a beautiful new cow valve. Surgery is just the first hurdle: the recovery is fairly brutal on both the physical and emotional levels. I was able to go to the ICU beginning at 12:30 PM and stayed with him through the evening. He was still sedated & had the breathing tube in for several hours. The tube finally came out at around 6:30pm, phew. Its so horrible - uncomfortable, the mucus makes you feel like youre drowning, etc. Dad has been such a trooper; even when clearly uncomfortable and in pain he is stoic. One of the first things he did when he got the tube out was croak out a joke when the nurse asked him where he was (Picabu, ICU; joke is Olympic skier Picabo Street; you can Google it). I had downloaded his meditation/soothing music playlist onto this iPhone, which he had during surgery, and thats now on his pillow playing; it makes a nice difference in the ICU, which is full of beeping machines and bright lights.
