Daily Affirmation: Continue to Find Moments of Rest In Tolkien’s Fellowship of the Ring, where Bilbo Baggins speaks to his old friend Gandalf, of his state of being? He said he felt “thin, sort of stretched ... like butter that has been scraped over too much bread." He was hoping to find a quiet place where he could rest, and in the end, he took to the open road in search of this solitude. We’ve been together for a year now, and throughout that time I’ve implored you to take the time to practice good self-care. As you resume your busy life, and perhaps find yourself to be overly active, I’d like to be the small voice in the back of your mind, telling you to slow down, take care; be mindful. Don’t become as Bilbo was: stretched, and thin, to the point of virtual transparency. Settle in to truly rest. Empty your mind of the cares of the day. If you can sleep, so much the better. Even if you can slip into dreams, let your weary body rest. This is very important, because grief can come up alongside you, when you least expect it: the music in the grocery store; the smell of someone’s perfume or after shave…even the bark of a dog that sounds so much like your dear pet – you’ve got to be able to bear it, when the moment requires. Quotation of the Day “Take Rest. The field that has rested gives a beautiful crop.” ~ Ovid
