Daily #BibleStudy Reading 38: The Book of #Genesis The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the whole earth. Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard. When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked. Context & Questions: The story of the Bible is, of course, complicated. Noah was a righteous man, we’ve heard, so God saved him and his family. But it happens repeatedly in the Bible that just when God seems to get things going a new way, someone does something that sets the story back. Also, we see here an example of how the crookedness of our world so often shows itself most clearly within our own families. The goods gifts of creation (vineyards, grapes, wine, and even families) can be misused and abused, away from the purpose God has for them. Next up: Fathers and their children
