Daily Devotion by Raul Ries FRIDAY January 16, 2015 Spiritual Eyes And the servants of Saul told him, saying, “In this manner David spoke.” Then Saul said, “Thus you shall say to David: ‘The king does not desire any dowry but one hundred foreskins of the Philistines, to take vengeance on the king’s enemies.’” But Saul thought to makeDavid fall by the hand of the Philistines. 1 Samuel 18:24-25 As Saul prepared to give his daughter Michal to David, he continued to scheme and use David’s humble spirit against him. He did not ask for anything from David, himself, he used his servants to pass along suggestions. He wanted David to think he was doing things on his own, but Saul was really manipulating him, trying to get him killed. Having David go after the Philistines to provide a dowry for Michal would accomplish two things for Saul. He would kill more of his enemies and possibly kill David too. Saul would reach his goals no matter what it took and who got hurt. Operating in his flesh, Saul could no longer see David as God intended him to be used. Instead of seeing the blessing David was to him, because of his humility and faithfulness, Saul used his loyalty to try and kill him. He no longer saw David through spiritual eyes. When we get our eyes off the Lord and we begin to serve our flesh, we no longer have a godly perspective. We no longer see the blessings God has put right in front of our eyes. David would be loyal to Saul until the very end, but Saul was too blinded by his flesh to see it. Do not be like Saul. Do not miss God’s blessing before you in order to serve the flesh. Envy is a settled, crooked malice. ~Thomas Manton~
