Daily Devotion by Raul Ries MONDAY September 22, 2014 Foolish Words 1 Samuel 14:27 But Jonathan had not heard his father charge the people with the oath; therefore he stretched out the end of the rod that was in his hand and dipped it in a honeycomb, and put his hand to his mouth; and his countenance brightened. This is a very important lesson. Jonathan had not heard his father make the oath to the Lord, but because Saul was the king, and he said, “Cursed is the man who eats any food until evening, …” he placed all the people of Israel under the oath, whether they heard it or not. How binding are oaths? In Numbers 30, Moses gave instruction on oaths, according to the Lord: If a man makes a vow to the Lord, or swears an oath to bind himself by some agreement, he shall not break his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth (Numbers 30:2). The words and oath of Saul were not only for him, but for all the people. Because he made this oath without Jonathan knowing, he caused his son to sin before the Lord. He did not know of the oath until after he had eaten the honey, but it was now sin. Something so innocent and necessary became sin, because of the foolish words of Saul. It is so important for us to think before we speak. It is so important to seek the wisdom of God before making decisions. The things we say and do can affect so many others, we cannot be careless with our words. Let thy speech be better than silence, or be silent. ~Dionysius the Elder~
