Daily Devotion by Raul Ries TUESDAY January 13, 2015 Desire Conviction Then Saul said to David, “Here is my older daughter Merab; I will give her to you as a wife. Only be valiant for me, and fight the Lord’s battles.” For Saul thought, “Let my hand not be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 1 Samuel 18:17 Again, it seems Saul had forgiven David and was no longer angry. He was going to honor his promise to give his daughter to the man who defeated Goliath. Saul appeared honorable before David and the people, but his heart was dishonorable. In his heart, Saul wanted the people to like him. He did not want them to turn against him if he killed David, so he pretended to honor David. He would ask David for a dowry for his daughter, which was expected during this time, and David would die at the hands of the Philistines. Saul’s problem would be solved. Wow! Saul was moving further and further away from the Lord. He was operating from the flesh. His fears and suspicions were controlling his thoughts and his actions. He felt no conviction for the bad things he was doing to David. Saul was not just coming against David; he was coming against the Lord, but with his heart condition, he did not know it. His heart was hardened. As Christians, conviction is important in our lives, because it tells us we are still hearing from the Lord. If we are feeling convicted, our hearts are not hardened against the Lord. Conviction of sin is essentially an awareness of a wrong relationship with God. ~J. C. Ryle~
